Introduction

 

What is WordComplete?

WordComplete is a utility that helps decrease text entry time.  After you enter a few letters, WordComplete offers a popup list of words and displays it at the bottom of the screen or at the cursor location. When you select the desired word, it is automatically inserted at the cursor location.  WordComplete  supports international language dictionaries in addition to the US English dictionary.

A 5-day trial is available from www.shopcic.com.  Only the US English dictionary is available with the trial version.

Installation/Setup

 

Setup Requirements

Installing WordComplete and its dictionaries

Remember to reset your Palm device after you install WordComplete and/or its dictionaries.  

Installing from a PC

  1. Locate the WordComp.prc file and double click on it.  The Palm Install Tool should open.  If the Palm Install Tool did not open, click on the Windows Start button.  Select Programs, Palm Desktop, and Palm Install Tool.
  2. Select the user name that corresponds to your Palm organizer in the user drop down list.
  3. If the Palm Install Tool opened when you double-clicked on the WordComp.prc file, you should have the WordComp.prc file listed under File Name.  If the PRC file is not listed, either
  1. Drag-and-drop the WordComp.prc file into the Install Tool File Name list.  Or,
  2. Click the Add button to open the Open dialog.  Locate and select the WordComp.prc file.  Click the Open button to return to the Install Tool dialog.
  1. Repeat steps 1-3 for the CICEnglish.PRC file.  If you are installing additional language dictionaries, repeat steps 1-3 for the dictionaries.  

    Note: If you've tried the trial version of WordComplete and have removed words from the Main dictionary and want to keep this dictionary, do not install this CICEnglish.PRC file. Installing this file will overwrite the dictionary you've been using.

  2. Perform a local HotSync® operation to install WordComplete.
  3. Reset your Palm organizer when instructed.  

For alternative installation instructions, refer to your Palm organizer handbook under "Installing Applications Using a Windows Computer." 

Installing from a Mac

  1. Locate the WordComp.prc file on your Mac.
  2. Select Install Handheld Files from the HotSync menu.
  3. Click Add To List and select WordComp.prc.
  4. Click Add File and WordComplete displays on your Install Handheld Files list.
  5. Repeat steps 1-4 for the CICEnglish.PRC file and any other language dictionaries.  

    Note: If you've tried the trial version of WordComplete and have removed words from the Main dictionary and want to keep this dictionary, do not install this CICEnglish.PRC file. Installing this file will overwrite the dictionary you've been using.

  6. Exit the Install Handheld Files dialog box.
  7. Make sure the HotSync Manager is running.
  8. Press the HotSync button on your Palm cradle to start HotSync. Refer to your Palm organizer Handbook for further information on HotSync.
  9. Reset your Palm organizer when instructed.  

For alternative installation instructions, refer to your Palm organizer handbook under "Installing Applications Using a Macintosh." 

Can I keep the words I've added to the Custom dictionary with the trial version when I install the full version?

Yes.  When you remove the trial version of WordComplete from your Palm organizer, keep the CICUserDict file.

Can I keep the main dictionary with the words I've removed with the trial version when I install the full version?

Yes. When you remove the trial version of WordComplete from your Palm organizer, keep the CICEnglish file.

  1. Tap on Applications
  2. Tap the WordComp icon
  3. Uncheck the box "Enable WordComplete"

  7. Perform a soft reset

Removing the Main or Custom dictionary

  1. Disable WordComplete
  2. Tap on the Applications icon
  3. Tap the Menu icon
  4. Tap Delete
  5. Select CICEnglish for the Main dictionary or CICUserDict for the Custom dictionary.  If you have installed international language dictionaries and wish to remove them, select the file here.   
  6. Tap Delete
  7. Tap Done
  8. Perform a soft reset

 

 

Using WordComplete

 

Entering words using WordComplete  

Using Jot or Graffiti
  1. In an application that allows text entry, place the cursor in the text entry area and start entering text with Jot or Graffiti.
  2. A wordlist will pop up after you enter the number of characters specified in your WordComplete settings.  
  3. If the word you are writing appears in the list, tap on the word.
  4. The word will be highlighted, then inserted into your text area completing the word you started writing.
  5. If the word you are writing does not appear in the initial list, continue writing until it appears.  
  6. If the word you are writing does not appear at all, you can add it to the custom dictionary for future use.  
  7. If you do not wish to select a word from the list, you can exit the word list by entering a "space" to begin writing your next word or tap outside the word list.  
  8. If you enter an incorrect character while writing your word, just backspace and the word list will refresh to contain words corresponding to the characters you've already entered.  

Using the on-screen keyboard

  1. In an application that allows text entry, place the cursor in the text entry area and start entering text by tapping characters on the on-screen keyboard.  
  2. A wordlist will pop up after you enter the number of characters specified in your WordComplete settings.  
  3. If the word you are writing appears in the list, tap on the word.
  4. The word will be highlighted, then inserted into your text area completing the word you started entering.
  5. If the word you are entering does not appear in the initial list, continue entering characters until it appears.

Using the keyboard

  1. In an application that allows text entry, place the cursor in the text entry area and start entering text by pressing the keys on the keyboard.
  2. A wordlist will pop up after you enter the number of characters specified in your WordComplete settings.  
  3. If the word you are entering appears in the list, press the up or down scroll key to scroll to the desired word.  The word will be highlighted once you depress the up or down scroll key.     
  4. Press the "space" bar to insert the word into your text area completing the word you started entering.
  5. If the word you are entering does not appear in the initial list, continue entering characters until it appears.  
  6. If the word you are entering does not appear at all, you can add it to the custom dictionary for future use.  
  7. If you do not wish to select a word from the list, you can exit the word list by pressing the "space" bar to begin writing your next word.  If a word is highlighted, the backspace key will dismiss the word list.  
  8. If you enter an incorrect character while entering your word, just backspace and the word list will refresh to contain words corresponding to the characters you've already entered.  

Does WordComplete support international characters?

Yes. You can add your own words containing European accented characters to the Custom dictionary.  

How many letters must I write before WordComplete offers suggested words?

You can set WordComplete to suggest words after writing one to four letters.   You can set this option in the WordComplete settings.

How many words will WordComplete display for me to select from?

You can set WordComplete to display one to five, or ten words in the pop-up word list.  You can set this option in the WordComplete settings.

Can a space be automatically inserted after I select a word from the WordComplete list?

Yes.  You can set this option in the WordComplete settings. Check the box to "Insert a space after word."

Can I reverse the order of words displayed on the list?

Yes.  You can set this option in the WordComplete settings. Check the box to "Reverse order of words."

Can I display words I frequently write to be one of the first choices?

Yes.  Just add your frequently used words to the Custom dictionary, even if it's already in the Main dictionary.

Why are word choices not displayed even though WordComplete is enabled?

Check your selection for the Main dictionary. Make sure the CICEnglish dictionary is selected for the US English dictionary.  If you do not see this dictionary, you'll need to install the CICEnglish.prc file.  If you have other language dictionaries, make sure that it is selected as your main dictionary.  

When does WordComplete suggest a new word instead of continuing with the previous word?

Will WordComplete recognize a word if I precede it with a punctuation (i.e. / , - , * )?

No.

How do I clear the wordlist boxes that are left behind on my screen?

If you are using hacks or other third-party applications, especially screen echo apps, disable/remove them.

 

 

Dictionaries

 

What is the Custom dictionary?

The Custom dictionary allows you to add words not in the Main dictionary.  Added words will appear at the top or as the first choice the next time you write them. The following buttons are used in the Custom dictionary:


CLOSE  Exit Custom dictionary

ADD Add word(s) entered in NEW WORD field

DEL Delete word selected in the list

EDIT Edit word selected in the list. Then select ADD to replace the word

There are three methods to add words to the Custom dictionary.

Can I add multiple words or phrases to the Custom dictionary?

Yes. You can add up to 29 characters.

Why are there boxes in my string of characters in the Custom dictionary and/or pop-up list?

If your string of characters contains 'new line' or 'tab' functions, the Custom dictionary and pop-up list will display them as boxes. However, when you select to use these phrases, the 'new line' or 'tab' will be inserted properly.

Can I use only the Custom dictionary?

Yes. Select None for your Main dictionary.

Can I build my own dictionary and not use the Main dictionary?

Yes. First, select None for your Main dictionary. Next, add your own words to the Custom dictionary.

Can I add a list of words to the Custom Dictionary instead of adding one word at a time?

Yes. Use SmartScan.

Removing words from the WordComplete dictionaries

You can remove words from the Main and Custom dictionaries.  The default main dictionary is the US English dictionary.  If you have purchased and installed international language dictionaries, you can also remove words from them.  

Note: Words you remove from the Main dictionary cannot be restored. However, you can add the words to the Custom dictionary.

 

 

SmartScan

 

What is SmartScan?

SmartScan is a utility that allows you to quickly add a series of words to your Custom dictionary. SmartScan only selects/highlights words that are not in the Main or Custom dictionaries. The following buttons are used in SmartScan:  


STOP/START Pause SmartScan to manually select word(s). Press START to continue from the current or new cursor location.

ADD Add selected word(s)

SKIP Skip selected word(s)

CANCEL Exit from SmartScan mode

How do I add a word SmartScan skipped?

  1. Pause SmartScan by tapping on STOP.
  2. Highlight the word you wish to add.
  3. Tap on ADD.
  4. Place cursor at location you wish to continue with SmartScan.
  5. Tap on START to resume.
