Using Alarmed!
After downloading Alarmed! install both alamed.prc and alarmedalarms.pdb on your Palm organizer, using the installation tool provided as part of the Palm Desktop software. More information about installing applications can be found at NearlyMobile.com.

If you are upgrading to Alarmed! from Snoozer, then please make sure you uncheck 'SnoozeHack' in the HackMaster control panel before running Alarmed! Your Snoozer registration state is carried over to Alarmed! automatically.

The Alarmed! Main Screen

To make Alarmed! active you need to check the check box marked 'Enable Alarmed!'. This causes Alarmed! to intercept alarm calls from any application and makes Alarmed!'s facilities available. It is important that you uncheck this box when upgrading or remiving Alarmed! from your system.

The next checkbox is 'Mute Alarms'. Checking this causes Alarmed! to silence all alarms on your device - so they don't make s ound when they go off. This can be useful in meetings or other quiet places, where you do not want your Palm to disturb you.

The list shows all the alarms that Alarmed! has snoozed and that are waiting to sound again. Alarmed! can grab alarms from any application on the Palm and snooze it. Once an alarm has been snoozed by Alarmed! it becomes an Alarmed! alarm, rather than remaining with the original application. You can select alarms from this list and view and edit the time that they will sound, or remove them altogether.

The Alarm Settings Dialog

Pressing the Settings button on the main screen brings up the Settings Dialog. This dialog allows you to configure the sounds that Alarmed! will use to notify you of an alarm, from any Palm application.

The first option is the number of times that Alarmed! will play the alarm sound before showing the alarm dialog box. This is most useful if the alarm sound you are using is a short tone or tune.

The next set controls the way that Alarmed! will nag you if you fail to acknowledge an alarm. Alarmed! will sound a second (and more, if you want) alarm if you don't respond to the first alarm. You can choose both the number of nags that Alarmed! will send and the gap between the nag alarms.

Finally you can choose the sounds or tunes that Alarmed! will play when an alarm or a nag sounds. These alarms are taken from both the System alarm database and the AlarmedAlarms database (if you installed it). You can use our companion product AlarmMaster to create and edit new alarm sounds and tunes that Alarmed! will use.

The Alarmed! Buttons Dialog

Pressing the Buttons button on the main screen brings up the Buttons Dialog. This dialog allows you to assign special behavior to the four hard buttons on the bottom of your Palm when an alarm is displayed.

You can assign a different action to each of the hard buttons (these are the solid plastic buttons, usually used for Datebook, Phonebook, ToDo and Memopad). The actions range from simulating a press on the 'OK' button of a dialog box to capturing an alarm for snoozing, for periods between 5 minutes and 24 hours. The actions are only asssigned when an alarm dialog is displayed, and do not interfere with the normal operation fo the buttons at other times.

Assigning one button to be a 'Press OK' action is a very quick and convenient way of acknowledging an alarm, without having to use the stylus or actually tapping the OK button.

Snoozing alarms is just as easy - just choose your preferred snooze periods on this screen and press the appropriate hard button when the alarm dialog is displayed. For example, if the Phonebook icon is set to 'Snooze 5 Minutes' then I can get any alarm to snooze for 5 minutes by pressing the Phonebook button on my Palm when the alarm dialog is on the screen. The alarm is 'grabbed' and taken to Alarmed! and will be sounded and shown again in 5 minutes, when I can acknowledge it or snooze it again.

The Alarmed! Edit Dialog

Selecting any of the alarms listed in the main Alarmed! screen and pressing the Edit button takes me to the Edit Dialog, where I can both view the contents of the alarm and edit the time that the alarm will sound. To change the time of an alarm select the hour or minutes unit and use the arrow buttons to move up and down. To change the date press the date selector and a calendar screen will appear.

The Alarmed! Test Alarm

To help you get used to Alarmed! and how it interacts with the alarms on your Palm there is a Test function. Pressing the Test button on the main screen sets an alarm. When the alarm pops up (after a second or two) you can try out the button and sound settings as described above.

Remember that the Alarmed! settings only work when the Enable Alarmed! check box is ticked!
